Balanced model reduction of partially-observed Langevin equations: an averaging principle

We study balanced model reduction of partially-observed stochastic differential equations of Langevin type. Upon balancing, the Langevin equation turns into a singularly perturbed system of equations with slow and fast degrees of freedom. We prove that in the limit of vanishing small Hankel singular values (i.e., for infinite scale separation between fast and slow variables), its solution conve...

Structure-preserving model reduction of partially observed differential equations: molecular dynamics and beyond

Model reduction is a major issue for control, optimization and simulation of large-scale systems. We present a formal procedure for model reduction of perturbed linear second-order differential equations. Second-order equations appear in a variety of physical contexts, e.g., in molecular dynamics or structural mechanics to mention just a few. Common spatial decomposition methods such as Proper ...

Averaging Principle for Differential Equations with Hysteresis

The goal of this paper is to extend the averaging technique to new classes of hysteresis operators and oscillating functions as well as to bring more consistency into the exposition. In the first part of the paper, making accent on polyhedral vector sweeping processes, we keep in mind possible applications to the queueing theory where these processes arise naturally. In the second part we conce...

Passivity-Preserving Balanced Truncation Model Reduction of Circuit Equations

We consider passivity-preserving model reduction of circuit equations using the bounded real balanced truncation method applied to a Moebius-transformed system. This method is based on balancing the solutions of the projected Lur’e or Riccati matrix equations. We also discuss their numerical solution exploiting the underlying structure of circuit equations. A numerical example is given.

Averaging principle for a class of stochastic reaction–diffusion equations

We consider the averaging principle for stochastic reaction–diffusion equations. Under some assumptions providing existence of a unique invariant measure of the fast motion with the frozen slow component, we calculate limiting slow motion. The study of solvability of Kolmogorov equations in Hilbert spaces and the analysis of regularity properties of solutions, allow to generalize the classical ...
